The Kampong

Along Biscayne Bay in Coconut Grove, Florida, is nestled one of South Florida’s most beautiful and treasured historical sites,
The Kampong.

This 11-acre tropical paradise is the former residence and personal garden of Dr. David Fairchild, one of America’s most distinguished botanists, horticulturalists and plant collectors and his wife Marian, a daughter of Alexander Graham Bell.

Over 5,000 plants are located at The Kampong , many of which Dr. Fairchild planted himself. Dr. Fairchild spent much of his career traveling the world -- and especially Indo-Malaysia, South and Central America -- exploring for new plants on behalf of the USDA. Under his direction, over 2,000 new plants were introduced to the U.S. Through his work, he revolutionized America’s diet and enriched our agriculture.

Today The Kampong is one of five gardens and three preserves of the National Tropical Botanical Garden. It plays an important role as a resource for local, national and international scientists. It is a place where students and the lay community come to learn, and where botanical knowledge and resources are shared.

Its main house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and with its breathtaking gardens, represents one of South Florida’s most unique venues for scientific study, community programming, educational conferences and events.
